FENG SHUI OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY
by Diane Grobler
The Forbidden City consists of a complex of palaces covering almost 70 hectares. Surrounding this is a moat and a body of water located to the southwest/west.

Most noticeable are the bright halls and undulating nature of the courtyards between the main gate and key Imperial structures. This gives a very good example of qi distribution and perfect flow of qi.

Very evident was the fact that flying star charts flown to locate the different palaces within the Forbidden City were not much help, What was of use was where incoming and outgoing water was located.

Internal water was in a belt formation and was therefore usable. The water circulation from SE to NW in the Forbidden City was the problem. In the Xuan Classics, water which circulates from SE to NW says ‘one who hangs himself’ (4 in and 6 out). This is not water IN the 4,6.

The Gua of the Emperor concerned, Chong Zheng, is Gua 2. This with the life palace technique clearly show death by hanging
In the year 1611, using Life Palace technique, there is a 5,2 in his life palace. He died by hanging himself in the SE sector of Jinshan Hill. The palace is not good.

On the Jia Tzi pair ring of the loupan there are 2 pairs, one in P1 and one in Period 8. P8 should have been used to give a longer lasting period and P1 should be used to tap into the shorter period. The use of ‘One Gua Formation’ is longer lasting but P1 is more stable than P8 for direct change over of dynasties.

During the present period the lake in the SW/W is very bad as the water location violates the Direct/Indirect Spirit which would make the feng shui of the Forbidden City, at the present time, bad. This is something Chairman Mao knew as he refused to use the Forbidden City.
With water coming in in the SE, we have Early Heaven/Later Heaven water, Dui and Kun (7,2) - the only positions with locational water. In Early Heaven, fire formation is also 7,2 - very easy to catch fire. The Forbidden City has been burnt down a several times over its history.

In the north of the Forbidden City is Jinshan Hill which gives, not only a bird’s eye view of the Forbidden City, but an excellent observation point of the entire city of Beijing. This gives an excellent view of the land form and all the water locations in the city. The main dragon vein comes from the Chastity Star mountains rising in the NW - Hai - and coming in from Kan - (Hetu 1,6). These are also ingot mountains which when shaped like human wealth really are good. The palace faces south and this fulfils the Emperor producing formation.

The lakes and embracing water dragons were beneficial at certain times during the empire and detrimental at other times.

The Qing Dynasty used the Gu Gong Palace in Shen Yang as their Royal residence up until the death of Huang Taji in 1643 - a Jia Shen year - when the Qings moved their seat of power to the Forbidden City in Beijing. This coincided with a change to period 8. As P9 governs the Upper period, the water in the SW/W did not affect them. It was only after the death of Qing Long in 1799 that the dynasty began its downfall. The beginning of the downfall of the dynasty coincides with period 6 when water in the SW/W was extremely bad.
